킹스톤 서비톤의 제임스 베리 국회의원이 <한인사회에 보내는 편지>와 사진을 한인헤럴드 앞으로 보내왔다. 내용 그대로 번역해 공개한다.

I was honoured to be elected as your Member of Parliament on 8 May. As our first Conservative MP for 18 years I’m relishing the challenge of representing our local area to the best of my ability and delighted to be part of Prime Minister David Cameron’s team.

저는 지난 5월 8일 킹스톤과 서비톤의 국회의원으로 당선된 제임스 베리입니다. 여러분의 국회의원으로 일하게 되어 영광으로 생각합니다. 18년 만에 처음 당선된 보수당 국회의원으로 우리 지역사회 대표로 즐겁게 생활하고 있으며 캐머런 총리의 보수당 정권에서 여러분과 함께 해 행복합니다.

 

The Korean community has for many years been an important part of the fabric of Kingston upon Thames. That is why I mentioned the Korean community in my maiden speech in the House of Commons ? as well as Korean food, which I love!

한국 교민사회는 오랫동안 킹스톤에서 중요한 역할을 해왔습니다. 그래서 당선 후 하원 첫 연설에서 한국 교민 사회와 제가 좋아하는 한국 음식을 언급하기도 했습니다. 

 

New Malden is fortunate to be home the largest Korean expatriate population in Europe. For me, it has been wonderful to engage with such a vibrant community, who play an incredibly valuable role in the business, entertainment and higher education sectors here.

뉴몰든은 유럽에서 가장 큰 한국인 커뮤니티입니다. 이렇게 활기찬 커뮤니티와 소통을 하며 한국인들이 킹스톤 지역에서 사업, 예술, 문화, 교육 등 분야에서 얼마나 큰 역할을 하는지 알게 되었습니다. 

The UK’s relationship with Korea is also a great asset to both countries’ economies, with the UK currently Korea’s main trade and investment partner in Europe. Thanks to this important relationship and others, direct investment in the UK reached a record high last year, with significant growth in professional, scientific, technical, hospitality, retail, and manufacturing sectors. 

한국과 영국의 밀접한 관계는 양국의 경제발전에도 많은 도움이 되고 있습니다. 영국은 유럽국가 중 한국과 가장 많은 무역활동을 하는 나라이자 든든한 투자 파트너입니다. 양국이 이 관계를 좋게 유지한 결과, 영국은 외국인 직접투자 부분에서 역대 최고 성과를 이뤘고 과학, 기술, 서비스업, 유통업, 제조업 등의 전문 분야에서 눈에 띄게 성장했습니다. 

 

My party, the Conservative Party, supports aspiration. We want to create a Britain where anyone can get on in life whatever their background. That’s why we are investing in schools and apprenticeships, making it easier for businesses to create jobs and cutting tax so that millions of people can keep more of their hard earned cash.

제가 속한 보수당은 꿈과 목표를 지지합니다. 보수당은 모든 사람이 자신의 배경과는 상관없이 원하는 삶을 살 수 있는 영국을 만들려 합니다. 그래서 학교, 인턴 교육에 투자하고, 기업은 더 많은 일자리를 창출하도록 지원하며 열심히 일하는 영국인들의 수입을 늘리려 세금을 줄이고 있습니다. 

 

To tell you a little bit about myself. I’m 31, married and live in Surbiton. I was educated at UCL and Harvard before practising as a barrister (lawyer) in London for 8 years.

제 소개를 하자면 저는 31살 유부남이며 서비톤에 살고 있습니다. 영국 UCL대학과 미국 하버드 대학에서 공부한 뒤 런던에서 8년째 변호사로 근무하고 있습니다. 

As your MP I have already set about campaigning for more school places in Kingston, extra police officers, improvements to our rail services, better support for local small businesses and protecting our local NHS services. My campaigns have already led to the 30 Minutes Free Parking to support small shops and twelve extra police officers to help keep crime in Kingston low. 

여러분의 국회의원으로 저는 킹스톤에 더 많은 학생이 공부할 시설, 더 많은 경찰, 더 편리한 교통, 중소기업을 위한 혜택, 우리 지역 NHS 병원을 지키는 운동 등에 힘써왔습니다. 그 노력으로 지역 업소를 방문한 이들이 30분 무료주차를 할 수 있게 되었고 킹스톤에 범죄율을 낮추려 12명의 경찰관을 새로 늘렸습니다.  

I have had the honour of meeting with the Korean Ambassador Sungnam Lim on a number of occasions and recently enjoyed attending the Korean Food Festival in New Malden, as well as a Korean School graduation in Chessington and the commemoration of the 62nd Anniversary of the Korean War Armistice in London.

저는 여러 차례 임성남 주영한국대사를 뵐 기회가 있었는데요, 최근 뉴몰든에서 열린 한국음식축제와 체싱톤 한인학교 졸업식에 참가했고 런던에서 열린 정전 62주년 행사에 참가했습니다.
